The Role of Arts and Culture
in the Vitality of Downtown

Join Hometown Minnesota in Winona, the home of the Great River Shakespeare Festival, on October 28th to discuss how artists and art organizations can enhance your Main Street and help achieve community redevelopment goals. Presenters will identify how investment in the arts enhances community image and improves other economic development efforts. Presenters will discuss specific examples of how art and culture has enhanced community development, and the clear links between arts and the vitality of downtown.

The program will feature several speakers. Debbie White, Winona City Councilmember At-Large, has over 20 years of professional dance training, performing and teaching, including 8 years at Alvin Ailey American Dance Center in New York City. She has served on the Great River Shakespeare Festival Board of Directors since its inception. Ms. White will describe why and how artistic and cultural opportunities play a critical part in supporting and sustaining the long term vitality of a community, its businesses and educational processes. Eric Sorenson is the Executive Secretary of the Port Authority and has been Winona City Manager for 18 years. Mr. Sorenson will discuss the positive impact of arts and cultural developments in the economic profile of a community. Additional speakers include Gary Evans, President of HBCI, Senator Bob Kierlin, and Representative Gene Pelowski.

Cost: $75.00 per community. Workshops are free to Hometown member communities. Refreshments will be provided.
